The game of Bingo is simple, easy to learn and dates back to sixteenth century Italy.  The game began as a national lottery game in Italy in 1530.  It was called Lo Giucco del Lotto D’Italia.  The game was quite popular with the population but not with the Catholic Church, which is ironic today because it is a considerable source of revenue for modern parish churches.  The game spread to neighboring France in the later 1770s and then throughout the European continent where it was greeted with the same enthusiasm as it was in Italy.

When the game reached America, it was reinterpreted to fit their preferences.  With the American version a caller pulled discs with numbers on them from a cigar box and called out the number.  The players covered the appropriate spot on their card with a pinto bean.  The game was called Beano then.  A toy salesman names Edwin Lowe was in the right place and the right time when a winner accidentally called out “Bingo” instead of “Beano”.  Lowe hired a mathematician to develop cards.  They didn’t have computers and software then that could use random number generators and the task had to be accomplished manually.  Lowe acquired over six thousand different bingo cards and began to market his game as Bingo.  His best customers were Catholic Church parishes that used the game as a form of fundraising to help defray expenses during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Church basically gave him his break and made the game of Bingo what it is.

Today you can play bingo almost anywhere in the United States and in many other countries.  There are also worldwide Bingo games online.

Bingo is a relatively easy game to learn and play.  The Bingo card is basically a grid consisting of letters and numbers.  The letters in the row across the top are Obviously, B-I-N-G- and O.  The numbers are under each of the letters with B having numbers one through fifteen; I has numbers sixteen through thirty; N has numbers thirty-one through forty-five; G has numbers forty-six through sixty; and O has numbers sixty-one through seventy-five.  A caller calls out the randomly selected numbers.  Usually there is a machine full of ping-pong balls where each ball has a letter and a number on it.  The machine expels balls one at a time.  The player marks the appropriate letter – number combination on his card.  Once a number has been called, it lights up on a big display board so the player can check for any numbers to see if they have been called.  The object of the game is to complete a specified pattern on the card, like all of the numbers in the “B” column, or across a row, a diagonal from “B” to “O” or vice-versa, or four corners.  When the player has completed the pattern specified in that particular game, he/she calls out “Bingo”.  If the numbers check out, the player wins whatever the prize is for that game.

Players buy more than one card.  Some players play thirty to fifty cards per game.  The cards are usually sold in packs or the player may select each card individually. Some cards may be sold that are used only for special games.  Players use bingo chips to cover the spaces of the called numbers.  These are clear plastic circular disks that come in different colors.  Many of them now are magnetic so the player can remove them with a wand when the game ends. There are also daubers used in games where the card is only used once or for the coverall, which is usually the last game of the evening.  These dabbers are bottles with sponges on the top.  The player inverts the dabber and presses down on the appropriate space on the card.  The result is an indelible and inerasable spot on the card. Daubers also come in different colors.  Most people will color-coordinate their chips and daubers.

Today, there are many variations on the basic bingo game as establishments make up their own patterns.  But the mechanics of play are the same regardless of the pattern. If you are playing Bingo at an establishment where you are unfamiliar with the pattern, it is best to ask before the game begins so you don’t make any mistakes and cost yourself a pot.

Since a Bingo game continues until there is a winner, the fewer the number of players there are, the better your chances of winning.  The winner is the player who completes the specified pattern first and there has to be a winner to every game. So whether you are playing online or at a bingo establishment, your chances of winning are always better with fewer players.  Also, the more cards you play, the better your chances of winning.  You should play the number of cards that are comfortable for you and your pocketbook.  If you have too many cards, you won’t be able to check them in the given amount of time.  As you become more and more nervous trying to check them, you start to make mistakes and put the chip on the wrong spot, you start to knock off chips accidentally, etc.  Instead of a relaxing enjoyable few hours, you end up a frazzled nervous wreck.  Each player will find his/her comfort level with the number of cards he/she can handle.  The number of cards also has to do with the speed of the call.  The faster the speed of the call, the fewer the number of cards players can play.  Many times you go to a different Bingo establishment, buy your usual number of cards and find yourself sitting there twiddling your thumbs in between calls or scrambling trying to check all of the cards in the allotted time.  It is difficult to know a priori how fast or slow the caller will be.
